O4 – Detections – GW190521 A discovery that challenged our understanding of black hole formation

#GWGreatestHits The detection of gravitational waves from the event GW190521 challenged our understanding of black hole formation. Resulting from the collision of two massive black holes, the final black hole produced gave the first clear evidence of the existence of black holes in the intermediate mass range that is theoretically forbidden.

The gravitational wave research group from IIT Bombay played a key role in the intermediate mass black hole search along with the colleagues from LIGO Scientific and Virgo collaboration. The research group at IIT Gandhinagar was involved in developing the filter bank used for the detection of black holes in the third observing run along with LIGO-Virgo scientists.
